Purchase, NY| The St. Joseph's College baseball team wrapped up Skyline Conference play with a sweep of SUNY Purchase on Saturday afternoon. The Golden Eagles edged the Panthers 3-1 in game one before cruising to a 9-0 win in game two.
St. Joseph's improves to 17-16 on the season and evens out at 9-9 in Skyline play. The Panthers drop to 15-15 overall, 5-9 Skyline.
SJC 3, PC 1
The Panthers were first on the board with an unearned run in the bottom of the second, but the Golden Eagles were quick to respond in the top of the third.
SJC's Gehrig Montoro and Tyler Costa started the inning with back-to-back singles and moved up 90 feet with a sacrifice bunt from Tyler Crafa. A Purchase defensive miscue led to the first SJC run followed by an RBI single through the left side from Jesse Nakashian put the Golden Eagles ahead 2-1. SJC's final run of the inning came curtesy of a sacrifice fly from Anthony Raucci pushing the score to 3-1.
St. Joseph's starter Tim Woodford breezed through the first eight innings allowing just one run on five hits with six strikeouts before giving way to Anthony Caminiti in the ninth. Caminiti retired the side in order to earn his third save of the season.
Costa and Crafa both finished with two hits on the day for the Golden Eagles.
SJC 9, PC 0
St. Joseph's wasted no time in game two putting up six runs in the top of the first in game two. A pair of unearned runs opened the frame and an RBI double down the right field line from Justin Stromski made it 3-0. One batter later, Michael Ferrufino blasted a three-run homerun over the right field fence giving the Golden Eagles a 6-0 advantage.
SJC plated a pair of runs in the top of the third and one in the fifth to claim the 9-0 victory.
Caminiti started game two allowing just two hits while striking out five in three shutout innings. Austin Turner scattered three hits with two strikeouts over the final four innings to earn his third win of the season.
The Golden Eagles return to Gregg Alfano Field on Tuesday, April 23 when they host Baruch College for a non-conference match up at 6:00 PM.
